Compressor Technology Overview
1) Rotary Vane - Panasonic
Rotary vane compressors feature a rotor with three or four vanes and a precisely shaped rotor housing. As the compressor shaft rotates, the vanes and housing create chambers that draw R134a refrigerant through the suction port. These chambers progressively decrease in size during rotation, compressing the gas until it discharges through the outlet port.
Centrifugal force and lubricating oil maintain vane seals against the rotor housing. The oil sump and pump on the discharge side utilize high pressure to force oil through the pump to the vane bases, ensuring continuous sealing. Occasional vane noise during idle is normal and results from oil circulation time through the A/C system.
2) Scroll Type - Sanden
Scroll compressors employ an innovative design with two interleaved scrolls—one fixed and one movable. The movable scroll orbits without full rotation, connected to the input shaft via a concentric bearing. As it oscillates within the fixed scroll, refrigerant pockets form and progressively decrease in size, increasing pressure until discharge through a reed valve in the compressor's rear section.
3) Variable Stroke - Harrison V5
The Delphi (Harrison) V5 compressor is a non-cycling, variable displacement unit that adjusts capacity to meet A/C system demands across all operating conditions. Its five-cylinder axial piston design incorporates a variable angle wobble plate.
A bellows-actuated control valve in the rear cylinder head monitors and responds to system suction pressure, regulating compressor crankcase pressure to adjust wobble plate angle and displacement. At maximum displacement, crankcase pressure equals suction pressure, while reduced displacement increases crankcase pressure above suction levels.
