Even the best compressor can fail early if installed or maintained the wrong way.
You bought a high-quality AC compressor. It arrived tested, properly oiled, and ready to go. Three months later – failure. What went wrong?
In many cases, the compressor wasn’t the problem. The installation or post-installation care was.
At Guangzhou Weixing, we’ve spent over 20 years manufacturing reliable compressors and helping customers get the longest possible life from them. Here are five common mistakes that kill compressors – and how to avoid them.
Mistake #1: Skipping the Receiver-Drier / Accumulator Replacement
Why it’s a problem:
The receiver-drier (or accumulator) traps moisture and debris. Once it’s saturated, it can’t protect the system. Moisture mixes with refrigerant and oil to form acid, which eats the compressor from inside.
What happens:
Internal corrosion, damaged seals, and eventually – seizure.
The fix:
Replace the receiver-drier or accumulator every single time you replace a compressor. No exceptions.
Mistake #2: Not Flushing the System After a Compressor Failure
Why it’s a problem:
When an old compressor fails, it often sends metal shavings, carbonized oil, and other debris throughout the AC system. A new compressor will suck up that debris and fail the same way.
What happens:
Blocked expansion valve, restricted flow, and rapid wear of the new compressor’s internal parts.
The fix:
Always flush the entire system (evaporator, condenser, lines) with a proper AC flush solvent. If the condenser is badly clogged, replace it.
Mistake #3: Incorrect Refrigerant Charge
Why it’s a problem:
Too little refrigerant means the oil doesn’t circulate properly – the compressor runs dry. Too much refrigerant causes dangerously high pressure and overheating.
What happens:
Undercharge → lack of lubrication → seizure.
Overcharge → high pressure → blown seals or clutch failure.
The fix:
Always charge by weight, not by guessing from pressure gauges. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s specified refrigerant amount (listed under the hood or in the service manual).
Mistake #4: Using the Wrong Oil or Wrong Oil Quantity
Why it’s a problem:
Different compressors and refrigerants require specific oil types (PAG, POE, or low-conductivity PAG for EVs). Wrong viscosity or chemistry can destroy a compressor in weeks. Too much oil reduces cooling; too little causes wear.
What happens:
Incompatible oil → seal swelling or breakdown → leaks and failure.
Wrong amount → overheating or seizure.
The fix:
Check the OE specification for the correct oil type and amount. Measure precisely. Never “top off” with unknown oil.
Mistake #5: Ignoring Drive Belt and Clutch Issues
Why it’s a problem:
The compressor relies on the engine belt and clutch to engage smoothly. A worn belt slips, causing inconsistent clutch engagement. A misaligned or damaged clutch creates heat and vibration.
What happens:
Belt slippage → reduced cooling, clutch overheating.
Clutch problems → failure to engage, or engagement at wrong times.
The fix:
Inspect the drive belt. Replace if cracked or glazed. Check clutch air gap (0.3–0.6 mm is typical) and ensure smooth pulley rotation.
Quick Checklist for a Long-Lasting AC Compressor
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| ✅ | Replace receiver-drier / accumulator |
| ✅ | Flush the entire system (or replace condenser if debris is heavy) |
| ✅ | Replace expansion valve or orifice tube |
| ✅ | Add exactly the right oil type and amount |
| ✅ | Pull a deep vacuum (at least 30 minutes) |
| ✅ | Charge refrigerant by weight (not pressure) |
| ✅ | Inspect belt and clutch before final test |
Why Guangzhou Weixing Compressors Are Built to Last
We can’t control how our compressors are installed – but we can build them to tolerate normal use and small variations. Every Weixing compressor is:
-
100% performance tested – not random samples
-
Pre-filled with the correct oil – measured, not guessed
-
Leak-tested and noise-checked before shipping
-
Compatible with both R134a and R1234yf systems (model dependent)
Even the best compressor needs proper installation. Follow the checklist above, and your Weixing compressor will keep your customers cool for years.
