New AC Compressor Failing Fast? 5 Things You’re Probably Overlooking

It might not be the compressor’s fault.

You install a brand new compressor. Three months later – failure. You blame the supplier. But sometimes, the real culprit is hiding elsewhere in the AC system.

Here are 5 overlooked issues that kill new compressors – and how to avoid them.

1. Old Receiver-Drier / Accumulator

This component absorbs moisture. Once saturated, it can’t protect the system. Moisture + refrigerant + oil = acid. Acid eats compressors from the inside.

Fix: Always replace the receiver-drier or accumulator when changing a compressor.

2. Contaminated or Incorrect Oil

Wrong viscosity. Wrong type (PAG vs POE). Too much or too little. Old oil full of debris. Any of these will destroy a new compressor quickly.

Fix: Flush the system. Use exactly the recommended oil type and quantity. Never reuse old oil.

3. Dirty or Clogged Expansion Valve

A stuck expansion valve causes low suction pressure or high discharge pressure. The compressor works overtime – and overheats.

Fix: Replace the expansion valve or orifice tube with every compressor replacement.

4. System Debris from Previous Failure

When an old compressor fails, it often sends metal fragments through the entire system. A new compressor sucks up that debris and fails the same way.

Fix: Full system flush. Replace condenser if debris can’t be cleaned out.

5. Incorrect Refrigerant Charge

Too little refrigerant = poor lubrication (oil doesn’t circulate). Too much = high pressure and overheating.

Fix: Always charge by weight, not by pressure gauge guesswork.

Quick Checklist Before Installing a New Compressor

Step Action
1 Flush the entire AC system
2 Replace receiver-drier / accumulator
3 Replace expansion valve / orifice tube
4 Add correct oil type & quantity
5 Vacuum system for 30+ minutes
6 Charge with exact refrigerant weight
7 Test pressures and vent temperature
