Working principle of automobile air conditioning compressor
The automotive air conditioning compressor serves as the heart of the air conditioning system, providing the power necessary for the refrigerant to circulate normally within the cooling system, enabling the refrigeration process. When the air conditioning system is activated, the compressor draws in low-pressure, low-temperature refrigerant vapor from the evaporator.
This vapor is then compressed by the compressor, raising its pressure and temperature. The high-pressure, high-temperature refrigerant vapor is subsequently discharged into the condenser, where it is cooled and condensed into a liquid by the air flowing over the condenser fins.
The condensed refrigerant liquid then flows to the receiver-drier, where it is stored and any moisture or impurities are removed. From the receiver-drier, the refrigerant liquid passes through the expansion valve or orifice tube, where it undergoes a sudden pressure drop. This pressure drop causes the refrigerant to flash into a low-pressure, low-temperature vapor-liquid mixture.
This mixture then enters the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the air blown across its fins, causing the refrigerant to evaporate and the air to be cooled. The evaporated refrigerant vapor is then drawn back into the compressor, completing the refrigeration cycle.
There are two main types of automotive air conditioning compressors based on their working principles: fixed displacement compressors and variable displacement compressors. Fixed displacement compressors have a displacement that increases proportionally with the engine speed and cannot automatically adjust their power output based on the cooling demand. In contrast, variable displacement compressors can adjust their compression ratio and power output in response to changes in the system pressure, allowing for more precise temperature control and improved fuel efficiency.
Overall, the compressor's performance has a direct impact on the quality of the air conditioning system. Its ability to efficiently compress and circulate the refrigerant is crucial for maintaining a comfortable cabin environment.
