How to Repair an Automotive A/C Compressor

1. Diagnosis and Preparation

Symptoms Check: Identify issues (no cooling, strange noises, leaks)

System Inspection:

• Check clutch engagement
• Measure refrigerant pressure
• Look for oil leaks
• Inspect electrical connections

Tools Preparation:

• Manifold gauge set
• Vacuum pump
• Refrigerant recovery machine
• Torque wrench
• PAG oil injector

2. Safety Precautions

• Disconnect battery
• Wear safety goggles and gloves
• Work in well-ventilated area
• Follow EPA refrigerant handling regulations

3. System Recovery

• Connect recovery machine
• Remove all refrigerant (EPA compliant)
• Capture oil for measurement

4. Compressor Removal

• Discharge AC system
• Remove serpentine belt
• Disconnect electrical connectors
• Label and disconnect AC lines
• Unbolt compressor mounts

5. Compressor Service

For Clutch Replacement:

• Remove center bolt
• Use puller to remove clutch assembly
• Replace bearing if needed
• Set proper air gap (0.35-0.6mm typical)

For Full Replacement:

• Drain and measure old oil
• Add correct amount of new PAG oil
• Install new receiver-drier/accumulator
