How AC Compressors Work
Car air conditioning compressors are essential components that pressurize and circulate refrigerant throughout the AC system. While compressors themselves become warm during operation, they facilitate the cooling process by enabling refrigerant to absorb heat from your vehicle's cabin.
The compressor engages to compress refrigerant gas (R134a), raising its temperature. This hot gas then flows to the condenser where heat dissipates, converting the refrigerant to liquid. After passing through the receiver drier to remove moisture, the refrigerant expands through the expansion valve, cooling significantly before entering the evaporator.
In the evaporator, the cold refrigerant absorbs heat from cabin air, which is then circulated through your vents. The refrigerant returns to the compressor as a low-pressure gas, completing the cycle that maintains comfortable cabin temperatures.
